Nokia releases Browser 2.0 update for Series 40 handsets with improved speed, multitasking in tow

Nokia announced earlier today the release of Browser 2.0 for its Series 40 devices, which of course includes the colorful Asha lineup. The update promises an overall speedier and easier browsing experience, this in large part due to the application condensing data by up to 90 percent. In addition to these enhancements, there’s also a novel Download Manager in the refresh, giving users the ability to choose where they’d like to save content without leaving the app. Also included in the update is a new multitasking-while-browsing feature (finally!), as well as a social-sharing bit that lets you push out page URLs to sites like Twitter, Facebook, Sina Weibo and RenRen. Browser 2.0 will be native on future Series 40s, but for now those whom already own a small chunk of the 1.5 billion can grab the goods from the Nokia Store or wait for the OTA package to hit your device.

Giuliana and Bill Rancic Expecting First Child This Summer (Video)

2012-04-24 - 03:54 | cool reads | No comments

Giuliana and Bill Rancic were on the Today show this morning to announce some wonderful news. The couple will become first time parents this summer. Anyone who has watched Bill and Giuliana?s reality show or even seen an interview with the couple is aware of just what they have gone through to become parents. They have seriously struggled with one heartbreaking moment after another. Thankfully though their wish has come true and they will have the baby they have been dreaming of this summer. In a joyous interview with Ann Curry on the Today show the very happy couple shared the news that they are expecting their first child via a gestational surrogate. What that means exactly is that it is their biological child and this woman is just carrying it for them. Bill and Giuliana revealed that they are constantly in touch with the woman and that they know the sex of their baby. However they are not spilling if the nursery is going to be painted pink or blue. I watched the interview this morning and I have to say I was so moved. I mean it was only six months ago that Giuliana shared that she was [...]

Samsung countdown teases next Galaxy phone with anagram

Samsung Galaxy countdown teases you with anagrams

Sammy’s latest marketing ploy kicked off with a string of nonsense that could just as easily have come from the Sunday morning jumble: “Destination: tgeltaayehxnx,” declared the Samsung Mobile Twitter account. Anagram wizards will read that as, “the next Galaxy,” and wouldn’t you know it, it’s also the URL for an auspicious countdown clock. Sammy promises to let visitors take “the next step” in about 17 hours and counting. Bonafide internet sleuths can find an extra carrot strung up in the site’s source, reading, “discover how Samsung is about to challenge the way you view the Galaxy once more.” Is Samsung about to break its own May 3rd unveiling? We’ll let you know in 16 hours and change.

Update: It seems like that ticker just might be counting down to some sort of anagram guessing game, according to an Engadget tipster who partook in some directory diving. Among a series of assets of different colored lettered tiles he found images with instructions warnings, reading “Click on the letters in the correct order to reveal your real destination,” and “Following technology blindly often gets you nowhere.” Ominous.

[Thanks, Naor]

viddyRight after racing to the top of the App Store charts, Viddy just announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from a long list of celebrities ? not just tech celebrities, but also the kind that non-techies have heard of. Here’s who invested: Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Omniture founder Josh James, Skull Candy chairman Jeff Kearl, Roc Nation (the record label and entertainment company co-founded by Jay-Z), Overbrook Entertainment (founded by Will Smith and manager James Lassiter), ShoeDazzle founder Brian Lee, professional skateboarder Rob Dyrdek, soccer star Gerard Pique, and (I’m quoting from the press release here) “pop culture icon” Shakira.

WINGStand Portable Stand for iPhone and iPad and other Bluetooth Devices Review

2012-04-23 - 18:45 | cool reads | No comments

As I’ve mentioned before, the thing I haven’t liked about the iPads I’ve owned is the on-screen keyboard.? The virtual keys don’t lend themselves to touch typing.? None of the keyboard cases I’ve tried were what I’ve been looking for, because they have cramped, undersized keyboards, often with a non-standard layout.? The best keyboard I’ve [...]

Exclusive ‘Ted’ Photo: Foul-Mouthed Teddy Bear Up To His Old Tricks

If parents (who clearly haven’t watched the trailer) were tricked into thinking “Ted” would be a cute family film about Mark Wahlberg and his cuddly teddy, this new photo will clear up their confusion. The comedy centers on John Bennett (Wahlberg) as a 35-year-old who just can’t seem to let go of his childhood best [...]

Afghan girls poisoned in anti-education attack

2012-04-20 - 04:20 | cool reads | No comments

By Reuters

About 150 Afghan schoolgirls were poisoned on Tuesday after drinking contaminated water at a high school in the country’s north, officials said, blaming it on conservative radicals opposed to female education.?

Since the 2001 toppling of the Taliban, which banned education for women and girls, females have returned to schools, especially in Kabul.

But periodic attacks still occur against girls, teachers and their school buildings, usually in the more conservative south and east of the country, from where the Taliban insurgency draws most support.?

“We are 100 percent sure that the water they drunk inside their classes was poisoned. This is either the work of those who are against girls’ education or irresponsible armed individuals,” said Jan Mohammad Nabizada, a spokesman for education department in northern Takhar province.?

Some of the 150 girls, who suffered from headaches and vomiting, were in critical condition, while others were able to go home after treatment in hospital, the officials said.

They said they knew the water had been poisoned because a larger tank used to fill the affected water jugs was not contaminated.?

“This is not a natural illness. It’s an intentional act to poison schoolgirls,” said Haffizullah Safi, head of Takhar’s public health department.

None of the officials blamed any particular group for the attack, fearing retribution from anyone named.?

The Afghan government said last year that the Taliban, which has been trying to adopt a more moderate face to advance exploratory peace talks, had dropped its opposition to female education.?

But the insurgency has never stated that explicitly and in the past acid has been thrown in the faces of women and girls by hardline Islamists while walking to school.?

Education for women was outlawed by the Taliban government from 1996-2001 as un-Islamic.
